This small settlement of roughly 42,000 people in Beijing's Fangshan District, about 50 kilometres southwest of the capital's center, sits atop some of the most important karst geology on Earth -- limestone hills riddled with caves, sinkholes, and underground water channels that preserved the fossilized remains of Homo erectus pekinensis and launched a century of archaeological discovery.
