In October 1909, a train completed the first journey on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway, the first line solely designed and built by Chinese engineers. The chief engineer, Zhan Tianyou, had solved a seemingly impossible problem: how to push a railroad through mountain passes that climbed too steeply for the locomotives of the era. His solution -- a switchback system at the Qinglongqiao station -- became a point of national pride. More than a century later, a high-speed train covers the same route in 47 minutes. But Zhangjiakou's story stretches back far further than the age of rail, to a time when this mountain city served as the threshold between civilizations.
