The Yellowstone Art Museum, known locally as the YAM, opened in October 1964 in this former jail, transforming a symbol of frontier justice into Montana's largest contemporary art museum. It is an unlikely metamorphosis that perfectly captures the YAM's founding mission: to look beyond the Western genre art and historic artifacts that dominated Montana's cultural institutions and embrace the rich artistic practice occurring in the present.]]></description>
