Engineer Joseph "Steve" Broady knew the penalty: the railroad's contract with the U.S. Post Office imposed fines for every minute the mail arrived behind schedule. What happened next, at a curved trestle spanning a ravine near Danville, would become one of the most memorialized disasters in American railroading.
