Frank Chirkinian was dying of lung cancer when the World Golf Hall of Fame held an emergency election in February 2011 to induct him before it was too late. The television producer known as the "father of televised golf" recorded his acceptance speech on video less than two weeks before his death. That vote -- urgent, personal, breaking the Hall's own procedural rules -- captures something essential about this institution. For all its formal ballots and point systems, the World Golf Hall of Fame has always been driven by the conviction that certain contributions to the game must not go unrecognized, even if the rules have to be rewritten to say so.]]></description>
