Deep inside Wonderwerk Cave, layered in sediment a hundred meters from daylight, scientists found ash from burned grass and the charred fragments of bone, scorched where they lay rather than blown in by wind. It is the oldest secure evidence anywhere on Earth that human ancestors controlled fire inside a shelter. The cave's Afrikaans name means "miracle" - and standing in its cool dark, knowing what happened here, the word fits.
