When the tubular steel framework was finished in March 1992, audiences walking the narrow footbridge across the surrounding lake found themselves entering a theater that seemed to dissolve into the landscape -- walls of wire mesh and translucent polycarbonate panels letting the surrounding Atlantic Forest press right up against the stage. The opening night production was Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, a fitting debut for a building that itself feels like something conjured from the woods.
