That struggle ended in 1990, making Namibia one of the last African nations to shed colonial rule, and Windhoek -- perched at 1,600 meters on a plateau ringed by the Auas and Eros mountains -- became the capital of something genuinely new. The German colonial name stuck (pronounced "wind-hook," from the Afrikaans spelling), but the city underneath it was remaking itself.]]></description>
