Early European explorers mangled the pronunciation into "Chehalis" and applied it to the river, the people who lived along it, and eventually a U.S. Army fort established here in 1860. The town that grew up around that fort cycled through names -- Peterson's Point, Chehalis City, Fort Chehalis -- before settling on Westport when it incorporated on June 26, 1914. Through all those names, the sand remained constant: wind-sculpted dunes, miles of beach, and the Point Chehalis Peninsula jutting into the mouth of Grays Harbor like a gatekeeper between the Pacific Ocean and the sheltered waters beyond.
