The parks already shared an ecosystem - the Rocky Mountains don't recognize political boundaries. The symbolism mattered: after World War I, nations were searching for gestures of permanent friendship. The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park became the first of its kind, an ecological unit administered separately but recognized jointly, a monument to the idea that neighbors could choose cooperation over competition. The concept spread; transboundary parks now exist worldwide. Waterton-Glacier started the movement.]]></description>
