The Wapauwe Old Mosque in Kaitetu village, on the island of Ambon in Indonesia's Maluku province, stands as it has for over six centuries - its wooden frame lashed with fibers from the sugar palm, its walls clad in dried sago fronds, its multi-tiered roof rising without the aid of a minaret. Established in 1414, it is the oldest mosque in the Moluccas and possibly the oldest in all of Indonesia to survive in its original form. But survival here has never meant standing still. This mosque has moved - dismantled, carried, and rebuilt - at least twice across the mountains of western Seram and the coastal plains of Ambon.
