Every foreign embassy in the Sudanese capital needed its nationals out, and only one functional runway remained in reach: a desert strip 22 kilometers north of Khartoum that had been a US Army Air Forces ferrying field during World War II, and that now, for seventy-two hours in April 2023, would become the world's evacuation point.]]></description>
