Vlieland: Introduction

West-Vlieland had a church, a school, a windmill, and somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 people at its height around 1670. Then the plague came, and the pirates, and the sand. By 1736 only two houses still stood; by 1857 the spot where the village had been lay twenty-seven metres beneath the waves. What remains today is a single settlement, Oost-Vlieland, clinging to the eastern end of a long ribbon of dunes that the Dutch keep deliberately, defiantly quiet.
