That is how the town got its name — Virgem da Lapa, the Virgin of the Grotto — and how the first small church was built on the site where the cave had stood, and how eventually a whole municipality came into being along the high sandstone plateaus between the Jequitinhonha and Araçuaí rivers in northeastern Minas Gerais. The people who first lived here were the Aranã, an indigenous community whose descendants are still recognised in the state. The people who came next were garimpeiros — prospectors, panning for the diamonds and aquamarines that the Jequitinhonha basin concealed. Somewhere between gold fever and devotion, the town took root.]]></description>
