The Kumeyaay who lived there understood their homeland in terms that preceded and outlasted Spanish naming conventions by thousands of years. Today the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians holds that name as both tribal identity and reminder that this land was occupied, governed, and cared for long before outsiders arrived to impose their own vocabularies upon it.]]></description>
