USS Pueblo (AGER-2): Introduction

Photo credit Kristoferb, CC BY-SA 3.0. On January 23, 1968, a small American intelligence-gathering ship was operating in waters off the coast of Wonsan, North Korea. The USS Pueblo, a lightly armed vessel crewed by 83 men, had been monitoring Soviet naval activity and North Korean signals. What happened next became one of the Cold War's most humiliating episodes for the United States: North Korean forces surrounded the ship, opened fire, killed one crew member, and seized the vessel along with its crew and a trove of classified material. It was the first capture of a U.S. Navy ship on the high seas since the Civil War.
