Over the next four decades, this single hull would serve under at least five different names and in nearly as many roles: luxury liner, Navy hospital ship, Prohibition-era cruise vessel, Army troopship, and finally a hospital ship called Shamrock. Her story tracks the full arc of American maritime history in the first half of the twentieth century, from the gilded age of steamship travel through two world wars, and it ends not with a dramatic sinking but with a quiet decommissioning after the last war wound down.
