Photo credit Marcosvin10, CC BY-SA 4.0. The name is Tupi-Guaraní for large bird. Somewhere before the town took the name Uruaçu in 1943, the muleteers and merchants who followed the route down from the south called this place something else - the Passa Três ranch, then the settlement of Sant'Ana after the chapel Coronel Gaspar helped build in 1913. When the federal government decided in the early 1940s that Brazilian towns should shed their colonial-era Catholic names for indigenous ones, Sant'Ana became Uruaçu. The large bird the name commemorates has not been precisely identified in any record the town keeps. What is clear is that the name arrived by decree and that the place has carried it ever since.
