Across the middle of Lake Urmia, in northwestern Iran, a 15-kilometer causeway draws a hard line between two halves of what was once the largest lake in the Middle East. At its center, a tied-arch bridge rises 20 meters above the surface, its steel already stained rust-red by the hypersaline water below. The Urmia Lake Bridge, also called the Shahid Kalantari Causeway, is Iran's longest bridge. It was built to connect the provinces of East Azerbaijan and West Azerbaijan, cutting travel time between Urmia and Tabriz. But the bridge has become inseparable from a different story: the slow death of the lake it crosses.
