Artists and writers gathered in this highland town during the early 20th century, and the royal family has preserved traditions long since commercialized elsewhere on the island. Rice terraces surround the town on all sides, their green curves carved by the subak irrigation system UNESCO recognized as cultural landscape. About 75,000 people live in the district, though tourist arrivals swell that number daily - visitors whose very presence reshapes what drew them here. After the 2010 film Eat Pray Love sent Western seekers flooding in, a yoga and wellness industry took root alongside Ubud's temples and dances, redefining the town yet again.
