U-Tapao: The Airfield Built on a Shipyard: Introduction

U-Tapao -- from the Thai words for "cradle" and "trade winds" -- was once a shipyard where craftsmen built ruea-tapao, a style of sailing vessel resembling a Qing Dynasty junk. By 1966, the shipwrights were gone and the trade winds blew across an 11,500-foot concrete runway built for B-52 Stratofortress bombers. For nine years, this stretch of Thai coast 140 kilometers southeast of Bangkok was one of the most consequential pieces of real estate in the Vietnam War -- the base from which Strategic Air Command launched bombing campaigns that shaped the conflict's final years.
