When Thomas Gregory, a foreman at the Coalbrookdale foundry, drew the detailed designs for the bridge's iron members, he used mortise and tenon joints, dovetails -- the language of carpentry, translated into metal. Nobody had built a bridge like this before, so the builders reached for what they knew: woodworking techniques, scaled up in cast iron. The result, opened on New Year's Day 1781, was a 100-foot single-span arch across the River Severn that proved iron could do the work of stone and timber. It was not just a crossing. It was an argument in metal, and the world was persuaded.
