Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in this house on May 7, 1840, the second son of a mining engineer who managed the local ironworks. The composer lived here until the age of eight, and the estate has been preserved as a museum dedicated to those earliest years of a life that would produce Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the 1812 Overture.
