Photo credit E2568, CC0. The city takes its name from a mountain that takes its name from a concubine. In 645 AD, Emperor Li Shimin of the Tang dynasty was marching home from the Korean Peninsula when Caofei, his beloved consort, died at Dacheng Hill. He named the mountain after his dynasty -- Tang -- and centuries later, the city that grew around it adopted the mountain's name. Tangshan's origin story is intimate and sorrowful, but the city itself became something massive: China's cradle of industrialization, a coal and steel powerhouse, and the site of the deadliest earthquake in modern Chinese history.
