It was August 1963, and Beadell was running reconnaissance for what would become the Talawana Track, the final road of a career that had drawn more than 6,000 kilometres of lines across the empty heart of Australia. He did not yet know it would be his last. He only knew the sand ridges ahead, and the long habit of pushing through them alone.]]></description>
