Photo credit Carport, CC BY-SA 3.0. For most of the past fifty thousand years, a branch of the human family lived in North Africa and almost no one knew. Their story sat sealed in the sand of a single rock shelter in southwestern Libya, in a valley called Wadi Takarkori where the Algerian and Libyan Acacus mountains meet. In 2025, scientists pried open that secret. From two women who had been laid to rest here some seven thousand years ago - their bodies naturally mummified by the bone-dry desert - researchers recovered the first ancient genomes ever sequenced from the Green Sahara. What the DNA told them rewrote a chapter of human history that everyone thought they understood.
