When the clipper Sunny South slid into the East River at Williamsburg, New York, in September 1854, crowds gathered to watch, and the newspapers gushed over her long, knife-sharp bow and the racing lines that recalled the famous yacht America. She was the only full-sized ship ever built by the celebrated yacht designer George Steers, and for a few years she carried cargo between New York, San Francisco, and the China coast at breathtaking speed. But the qualities that made her beautiful made her useful to men with darker purposes, and the rest of her story belongs not to the crowds who cheered her launch, but to the hundreds of human beings later packed into her hold.
