It spends two weeks feeding in the mudflats, doubling its body weight, before continuing north to Siberia. The bird makes this stop for the same reason Suncheon Bay matters to ecologists worldwide: the wetland is extraordinarily productive, a living system where reed beds, tidal flats, and shallow waters sustain a density of life that few coastal environments on Earth can match.
