Storms River is a village small enough to walk across in fifteen minutes, but the gorge that gives it its name plunges so deep into the coastal mountains that standing on the suspension bridge at its mouth feels like hovering between forest and ocean with nothing solid in between. This is the adventure capital of the Tsitsikamma -- a handful of backpackers' lodges, outfitters, and guides clustered along the N2 highway in the Eastern Cape, all of them oriented toward a single purpose: getting you into the wilderness that begins where the pavement ends.
