Captain Arthur J. Beck survived the torpedoing of his ship. Then the rescue ship was torpedoed too. Then the next one. The SS Sylvan Arrow, a Standard Oil tanker built in Camden, New Jersey in 1917, had spent twenty-five years hauling petroleum across every ocean before a German U-boat found her off Curacao.
