Spotted Lake: The Sacred Waters That Turn Polka-Dot: Introduction

As summer evaporates its waters, the lake separates into dozens of circular pools - yellow, green, and blue spots depending on mineral concentration, surrounded by white and gray hardpan. The Syilx Okanagan Nation calls it Kliluk and considers it sacred: the minerals were used for healing, and the lake itself was a spiritual site. For a century, non-Indigenous owners exploited and commercialized it. In 2001, the Syilx purchased Spotted Lake, returning sacred land to those who had revered it for millennia. Visitors can now view it from the highway but cannot walk among the spots - a compromise between accessibility and protection.
