In 1945, weeks after Japan's surrender, a man named Kumazawa Hiromichi walked into a Tokyo press conference and announced that Emperor Hirohito was a fraud. He produced a koseki -- a family registry -- tracing his bloodline back through centuries to Emperor Go-Daigo, the sovereign who had established a rival imperial court in the mountains of Yoshino in 1336. Kumazawa was not arrested. He was not even mocked. The authorities simply let him talk, because the awkward truth was that by the Japanese government's own official ruling, issued in 1911, Go-Daigo's Southern Court had been the legitimate imperial line all along -- and the ancestors of the reigning emperor had been pretenders.
