South West Africa: Introduction

Germany claimed it in 1884. South Africa seized it in 1915. The United Nations revoked South Africa's mandate in 1966. South Africa ignored the revocation and stayed for another 24 years, applying its apartheid system to a land the rest of the world had started calling Namibia. When independence finally came on 21 March 1990, it arrived not through a single decisive moment but through decades of legal battles at the International Court of Justice, guerrilla warfare in the north, diplomatic pressure from Africa and beyond, and the slow, grinding collapse of the political logic that had kept South West Africa under foreign control.
