Every December, a waterspout rises from the center of Lake Matano. It stands motionless for a few minutes, a dark funnel roughly ten meters across, as if the lake were exhaling something it had held for a very long time. The people of Sorowako watch it from shore the way you might watch a neighbor's annual ritual -- familiar, unexplained, part of the calendar. The waterspout is not the strangest thing about this place.
