They had asked for time - a chance to use their cattle, to gather what they could, to delay the departure until they could survive the Canadian winter that waited at the end of the voyage. They were given no answer. So they fought back, and they lost, and a year later the district was completely cleared. The Battle of Sollas was not really a battle. It was the moment a small community refused, briefly, to be erased.
