The village was once called "Black Village" because outsiders knew almost nothing about it. When ancient cypress trees were discovered in the surrounding forest, the outside world found its way in. Now Smangus is called "God's Village," and it operates as something almost no other community in Taiwan attempts: a working experiment in communal living.
