Skeleton Coast: Introduction

Portuguese sailors, who had more direct experience of its dangers, preferred 'The Gates of Hell.' Both names are earned. The Skeleton Coast stretches along Namibia's northern Atlantic shore from the Kunene River at the Angolan border to the Swakop River, a strip of fog, sand, and surf where the cold Benguela Current meets the southern African desert. Rainfall rarely exceeds ten millimetres a year. Dense ocean fogs -- called cassimbo by the Angolans -- roll inland for much of the year. In the era of sail, crews could beach through the heavy surf, but launching back out was impossible. Survival meant walking south through hundreds of kilometres of marsh and desert. Most did not survive.
