Photo credit Saqib Qayyum, CC BY-SA 3.0. In 1887, a boy named Muhammad Ali Jinnah enrolled at a school in Karachi that had been founded just two years earlier. He was approximately ten years old. The school was Sindh Madressatul Islam, established on 1 September 1885 by Hassan Ali Effendi, a Sindhi educator who believed that Muslim children in the province deserved a modern education. Jinnah studied there until 1892, and fifty-six years later -- now called Quaid-e-Azam, the Great Leader -- he returned to the school in June 1943 to celebrate its elevation to college status. By then, Jinnah was four years away from founding a nation.
