The Dutch proverb emerged from the five bloody days of March 1640, when a VOC expeditionary force stormed the Portuguese fortress of Santa Cruz de Gale on Sri Lanka's southern tip. The assault was supposed to be swift -- a quick seizure of a strategically vital port. Instead, the Portuguese garrison fought with a ferocity that stunned the attackers, inflicting casualties so severe that the Dutch themselves coined a saying to mark the difference between easy and hard-won conquests. The fort fell, but the cost branded itself into colonial memory.
