Within days, thousands of sepoys -- Indian soldiers in the service of the British East India Company -- had seized the city and persuaded its 82-year-old emperor, Bahadur Shah II, to lend his name to their cause. What followed was a four-month siege in which disease, monsoon heat, and desperate street fighting consumed soldiers on both sides, and the fate of British India hung on whether Delhi's walls would hold.]]></description>
