When the French commander of Bastia was asked to surrender in April 1794, his reply was defiant: 'I have hot shot for your ships and bayonets for your troops. When two thirds of our troops are killed, I will then trust to the generosity of the English.' It was exactly the kind of resistance that the British had not planned for. Lord Hood had predicted the town would fall in ten days. The siege would last six weeks, and the real obstacles were as much British as they were French.]]></description>
