The medieval geographer Yaqut al-Hamawi recorded it in his 13th-century Mu'jam al-Buldan as a pair of mountains, Shadah al-Asfal and Shadah al-Ala, lower and upper, rising together above the low plains of Tihamah. Shadah al-Asfal is the southern one, reaching more than 1,500 meters above sea level, its massif a jumble of Precambrian granite spires that locals call Nadba, some of them standing like upended ships, nearly 200 meters tall, worn into shape by a billion years of weather.
