The Tsar Bomba hydrogen bomb detonated above the southern cape of Severny Island with a yield of 50 megatons of TNT, vaporizing every building in the village of Severny 55 kilometers away. It remains the most powerful anthropogenic explosion ever recorded. Today, the island still bears a Russian Army base on the same southern coast, and a lone meteorological station watches over the northernmost cape. The rest belongs to the glacier.
