That single fact captures everything about the Serra dos Três Irmãos Ecological Station: a place so wild, so poorly explored, that science has not yet caught up with what lives in its canopy. Established in 1990 on the left bank of the Madeira River in Rondônia, Brazil, this strictly protected conservation unit once covered nearly 100,000 hectares of Amazon rainforest. It has been losing ground ever since — not to chainsaws or cattle ranchers, as so many reserves in this region have, but to the expanding borders of dams and national parks that claim the land for different purposes.
