The Iriri rises in the Serra do Cachimbo and runs 900 kilometers before it joins the Xingu. The Jamanxim leaves from the same weathered uplands and drains the other way, toward the Tapajós. This is a place that makes rivers for a living - and then, almost as an afterthought, hides military secrets in the forest below.
