On St George's Day 1918, the old cruiser had pulled alongside the Zeebrugge mole under point-blank German fire, dropped marines onto the wall, and limped home full of holes. Three weeks later, the navy stripped her of everything that wasn't bolted down, packed her hull with concrete, and ordered her back to the Belgian coast to die. On the foggy night of 9 May 1918, Lieutenant Victor Crutchley took the wheel of the disintegrating ship and tried to wedge her sideways across the entrance to Ostend harbour. The plan was to drown her in the channel. It almost worked.
