Photo credit Public domain. In 1897, two German streets got electric lights for the first time. One was Unter den Linden, in Berlin - the most famous boulevard in the imperial capital. The other was the main street of Schuttorf, a small textile town in southwestern Lower Saxony with fewer than five thousand inhabitants. Schuttorf had built its own direct-current power station on Fabrikstrasse the year before. The Kaiser was electrifying his capital; Schuttorf was electrifying itself. For the next decade and a half, in this one specific respect, a county town on the Dutch border was as modern as Berlin.
