One theory points to an English whaling ship called the Sandwich that worked these waters in the 1780s. Another suggests the name is a corruption of the German word sandfische, a species of shark found in the area. Both stories feel plausible for a place defined by its relationship to the sea and sand in equal measure. Located about 80 kilometers south of Walvis Bay on Namibia's Atlantic coast, Sandwich Harbour is one of those rare landscapes where the desert does not merely approach the ocean -- it pours into it. Towering Namib dunes cascade directly to the waterline, their crests sharp against the sky, their bases dissolving into surf. Behind the bay, a shallow lagoon stretches south, fed not by rivers but by brackish water that seeps quietly beneath the dunes.
