The Chaleemongkolasana Residence resembles a reddish-yellow European castle, complete with French Renaissance details and English half-timbered walls, rising incongruously from the flat central Thai plains. It was originally named Yah Leh Residence, after a dog. This collision of regal ambition, Western imitation, and deep personal sentiment defines Sanam Chandra Palace, a complex that reveals more about the personality of King Vajiravudh than any official biography could.
