San Carlos de Borromeo Fortress: Introduction

It was November 3, 1816, and the retreating Spanish garrison had rigged the fortress to blow -- better to destroy San Carlos de Borromeo than leave it to the revolutionaries. A patriot soldier spotted the glowing trail by accident and stamped it out just in time. The fortress survived that night, as it had survived nearly two centuries of pirates, sieges, and warfare, standing watch over the Bay of Pampatar on the northeast coast of Isla Margarita.
